What’s in Your Laundry That Could Be Affecting Your Indoor Air Quality?

The laundry is easy to overlook because we do not usually sit in it for hours, but what happens there travels through the rest of the home. Detergent residues stay on fabrics, fragrance can move with clothing and dryer exhaust, moisture can feed mould, and stored cleaning products can release chemicals into a small enclosed room.

A healthier laundry is not about making everything unscented for the sake of it. It is about separating synthetic fragrance from essential-oil scent, reducing unnecessarily harsh chemistry, controlling moisture and making sure appliances are vented and maintained properly.


Synthetic Fragrance Can Travel Beyond the Laundry Room

Laundry products are designed to leave clothes smelling a certain way, which means fragrance compounds may remain on fabrics after washing and drying. Research on fragranced consumer products has identified numerous VOCs emitted from laundry detergents, fabric softeners, dryer sheets and other scented household products.

One study of 25 fragranced consumer products identified 133 different VOCs across the products tested. The important point is not that every scent is the same. Synthetic fragrance mixtures are different from using essential oils intentionally, and I treat them differently when choosing products for a home.


Harsh Chemistry Is a Separate Issue From Fragrance

Fragrance-free is not the same as low-tox. A product can be fragrance-free and still contain strong solvents, bleaches, disinfectants or other aggressive chemistry. And a product can smell pleasant without using synthetic fragrance. Read the ingredients and function of the product, not just the scent claim.

Research comparing household cleaning products has found substantial VOC emissions from many conventional products and some products marketed as green. Look at the whole formulation, use only as much product as necessary and ventilate when using stronger cleaners.


The Dryer Can Affect Both Moisture and Air Quality

Clothes dryers produce a large amount of warm moist air. EPA mould guidance recommends venting moisture-producing appliances such as dryers to the outdoors where possible because added indoor humidity can contribute to condensation and mould growth.

A gas-powered dryer adds combustion to the laundry environment. A 2025 Canadian residential study found gas clothes dryers were associated with higher indoor nitrogen dioxide concentrations. Correct outdoor venting and maintenance matter.


Front-Loader Smell Is Often a Moisture Problem

Rubber door seals, detergent drawers and internal components can stay damp after a wash. Closing the door immediately and leaving wet washing sitting in the drum creates a humid micro-environment that can support microbial growth.

Let the machine dry between loads according to the manufacturer’s guidance, clean seals and detergent compartments, remove wet laundry promptly and address any leaks rather than masking musty odours with stronger fragrance.


More Detergent Does Not Mean Cleaner Clothes

Overdosing detergent can leave residue in the machine and on fabrics, particularly in high-efficiency washers that use less water. Follow the machine and product instructions rather than filling to the top of a cap by habit.

Simplify first. Most laundries do not need separate scent boosters, fabric softener, dryer sheets, sanitiser and heavily fragranced detergent for every load.


What I Would Change First

Remove unnecessary synthetic-fragrance products such as scent boosters and strongly fragranced dryer sheets. Choose a simpler detergent that suits your household. Use harsh chemicals only when the task genuinely requires them. Vent dryers correctly, keep the room dry and deal with leaks or musty appliance odours at the source.

If you enjoy scent, essential-oil-based options are a different category from synthetic fragrance. Use them in ways designed for the product or appliance, not by adding undiluted oils randomly to fabrics or machines.
