Best Air Purifiers for Home: HEPA, CADR, Carbon and What to Look For

“Air purifier” is a broad label. One machine may be good at removing airborne particles, another may contain enough carbon to reduce some gases, and another may mainly rely on electronic ionisation. If you do not know which pollutant you are trying to reduce, the marketing can make all three look equivalent.


The starting point is simple: particles and gases need different filtration strategies.

HEPA is for particles


High-efficiency particulate air filtration is used to capture airborne particles. EPA notes that portable air cleaners with higher clean air delivery rates, or CADR, can filter more particles and serve larger areas.


For dust, smoke particles, pollen and other airborne particles, look at the CADR and the room size rather than assuming any unit with a HEPA label is powerful enough for the space.


CADR is not a score for gases


CADR is a particle-cleaning metric. It does not tell you how well a purifier removes VOCs or other gases. For gases, EPA recommends a filter specifically designed for gas removal, commonly using activated carbon or another sorbent.


The amount of carbon matters. A token thin carbon sheet is not equivalent to a substantial bed of adsorbent media.


Source control still comes first


If a room contains a continuous source such as an air freshener, solvent, strongly emitting product or indoor smoke source, removing or reducing that source is usually more effective than asking an air cleaner to chase the pollution indefinitely.


Use filtration as part of the strategy, not as a licence to keep unnecessary sources.


Avoid deliberate ozone generation


EPA describes ozone as a lung irritant and warns about ozone generators and some ionising air-cleaning technologies. I do not recommend buying a device whose selling point is that it deliberately produces ozone inside an occupied home.


If a purifier has an ioniser or plasma feature, check whether it can be switched off and look for independent information about ozone emissions.


Noise can decide whether the purifier gets used


A purifier only works while air is moving through it. EPA notes that higher fan speeds and longer run times generally increase filtration. If the machine is so loud that you switch it off, its laboratory performance becomes irrelevant.


Check noise levels at the fan speed you are likely to use, especially for bedrooms and home offices.


The real cost is not the purchase price


  • Check the replacement-filter price and recommended interval.

  • Confirm whether the advertised room size is based on a useful air-change rate.

  • Compare CADR for particle removal rather than only fan wattage.

  • For gases, check the type and quantity of sorbent media.

  • Check whether electronic features produce ozone and whether they can be disabled.

  • Make sure replacement filters will still be available in Australia.
