Garage Toxins That Could Be Entering Your Home

An attached garage is not separate from the home just because there is a door between them. Air moves through cracks, gaps and pressure differences, which means vehicle exhaust, fuel vapours, paints, solvents and stored chemicals can migrate into adjoining rooms.
This is one of the most overlooked healthy-home issues because the source is technically “outside the living space”, yet research shows the pollutants do not always stay there.
Attached Garages Can Raise Pollutants Inside the House
Health Canada identifies attached garages as a source of particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and VOCs that can infiltrate into the home. These pollutants can come from vehicles, petrol-powered equipment, fuels, cleaners, solvents and paints.
Canadian indoor-air studies have also found substantially higher benzene and xylene concentrations in homes with attached garages, particularly where petrol-powered equipment or fuel-containing products are stored.
A Garage Exhaust Fan Has Been Tested in Real Homes
A Health Canada intervention study installed outdoor-vented exhaust fans in 33 attached garages. When the garage fan was operating, gasoline-related pollutants measured in the living room were 43–62% lower, and carbon monoxide in the house was reduced by 23%.
The takeaway is practical: pressure and ventilation at the garage-house boundary materially change what reaches the living space. If garage odours or exhaust are entering the house, sealing and ventilation are not cosmetic upgrades, they are the first things to fix.
Never Warm Up or Idle a Vehicle in an Attached Garage
Starting or idling a car, lawnmower, generator or other combustion engine in a garage can create carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, particles and VOCs. Health Canada recommends avoiding idling vehicles or petrol-powered equipment in an attached garage.
Open the main garage door before starting a vehicle and move the vehicle outside rather than allowing exhaust to build up while you organise bags, children or equipment.
Stored Fuel and Solvents Can Off-Gas Even When Nothing Is Running
Petrol containers, paints, thinners, pesticides, automotive products and fuel-powered tools can release VOCs while stored. Health Canada recommends storing fuel-burning equipment and fuel containers in a shed or other location not attached to the house where practical.
Keep chemicals in original labelled containers, close lids properly and avoid turning the attached garage into long-term storage for every leftover paint, solvent and fuel product from a renovation.
The Door Into the House Is Part of Your Air Barrier
The connecting door should close properly and be well sealed. Gaps around the frame, worn seals and penetrations through shared walls or ceilings can provide paths for garage air to move indoors.
If you smell petrol, paint or exhaust inside the house after the garage has been used, treat that as evidence that garage air is reaching the living space. Fix the source, sealing and ventilation rather than masking the smell with synthetic fragrance or an air freshener.
What I Would Change First
Do not idle engines in the garage. Move petrol, solvents and other high-emission products to detached storage where practical. Keep the internal garage door closed and well sealed. Maintain carbon monoxide alarms as required for your home and jurisdiction, and investigate persistent garage odours inside living areas.
If the garage is used as a workshop, treat sanding, painting, spraying and solvent use as real air-quality activities. Use suitable local extraction and move high-emission work outdoors where practical.
