How Pool Chemicals Could Be Affecting Your Skin, Lungs and Health

A strong “chlorine” smell is not proof that a pool is clean. That smell is often chloramines, chemicals formed when chlorine reacts with sweat, skin cells, urine and other nitrogen-containing contaminants brought into the water.

A pool with an obvious chemical smell deserves investigation, not reassurance. Look at why chloramines are building up, how well the water is circulating and filtering, how much organic contamination is entering the pool, and what treatment system is being used.


That “Chlorine” Smell Is Often Chloramines

Free chlorine and combined chlorine are different measurements. Combined chlorine reflects chlorine that has already reacted with contaminants in the water, forming chloramines.

CDC guidance explains that chloramines can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory tract, especially when they build up in the air above water. Queensland Health likewise notes that combined chlorine is a poorer disinfectant and contributes to the strong offensive smell often associated with pools.


That Strong Pool Smell Can Be a Maintenance Clue

A very strong pool odour is a maintenance clue. Chloramine formation is one of the first things to investigate, along with water chemistry, contamination, circulation and treatment.

If you want to reduce chloramine buildup, look beyond simply adding more chemicals. CDC notes that ultraviolet light or ozone systems can help break chloramines down. Better circulation, filtration, fresh air around the water and reducing the organic load entering the pool can all be part of the strategy.


Outdoor Pools Have an Air-Quality Advantage

Outdoor pools benefit from far greater air movement than enclosed aquatic centres, so volatile compounds are less likely to accumulate around swimmers in the same way they can indoors. That said, strong chloramine formation can still irritate eyes and skin, and concentrated treatment chemicals remain hazardous before they are diluted into pool water.

If someone consistently develops eye, skin or respiratory irritation around a pool, investigate water chemistry, chloramine levels, circulation and maintenance rather than dismissing it as simply “sensitive skin”.


Pool Chemical Storage Is a Serious Safety Issue

CDC pool-chemical guidance warns never to mix chlorine products with acid because toxic gas can be created, and not to mix different pool chemicals with each other. Chemicals should be handled in well-ventilated areas, kept dry and stored according to the product label.

Keep pool chemicals in their original labelled containers, secured away from children and pets, and separated so spills cannot allow incompatible products to mix.


Do Not Judge Water Quality by How Clear It Looks

Clear water can still have incorrect disinfectant levels or pH. Testing matters. Free chlorine, combined chlorine and pH provide different information, and the right targets depend on pool type, temperature and treatment system.

If you use a pool service, ask what they are testing and what the results mean. Understanding the numbers is more useful than judging the pool only by colour or smell.


What I Would Change First

Test rather than guess. Keep filtration and circulation maintained. Investigate strong persistent odours rather than covering them with more chemicals. Store concentrated products safely and never mix incompatible pool chemicals. Keep the surrounding outdoor area well ventilated and shaded so people can use it without excessive heat or glare.

For families with neurological conditions or sensory triggers, also consider the whole pool environment: glare from water and paving, noise, chemical odour, access to shade and the transition back into the house.
